Sony Launches 12MP CMOS Image Sensor for Mobile Phone Cameras

Japanese Sony announced on November 13 that the company has launched a new CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) image sensor for mobile phones with built-in digital cameras, according to a press release by Sony. The new device, which boasts a resolution of 12.25MP (Megapixel), is projected to begin shipments in March 2009, and the mobile phones featuring such image sensor are expected to hit the market in Spring 2009 at the earliest, Nikkei reported. Currently the highest image resolution of existing mobile phone cameras is around 5MP.
